Artistic Director
The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers is seeking its next Artistic Director for their 23 nd
season in 2023-24 beginning on July 1 st , 2023. The organization is made up of an adult choir of
75-80 auditioned voices, a 26-voice chamber chorus consisting of select members of the full
chorus, and a music therapy program, the Intermezzo Choir, for patients suffering from various
forms of dementia along with their care partners.
The chorus is a significant cultural presence in one of the fastest growing, and choicest, areas in
the country, Southwest Florida. The group’s repertoire runs the gamut from classical
masterworks to innovative new compositions by contemporary composers presenting two
concerts annually with the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra and two others with a hired
professional orchestra. The chamber chorus performs a separate repertoire each season in three
or four concerts at smaller, more intimate settings. All of the choirs are accompanied by a single
paid collaborative pianist.
Responsibilities
Programs concerts centered around challenging and interesting works that include choral
masterworks and contemporary music.
Lead and direct Monday night full chorus rehearsals that not only teach repertoire but also,
improve vocal production and singing abilities in a diverse group of volunteer singers.
Rehearsals run from 7:00 to 9:30 weekly from September through the end of May.
Set a schedule and lead and direct Chamber Chorus rehearsals as needed based on season
programming.
Option to lead and direct the Intermezzo Choir in weekly rehearsals through 2 ten-week sessions
for additional compensation.
Recruit and audition new members for the chorus. Reaudition current chorus members. Work
with the Board of Directors to establish attendance requirements and reaudition policy.
Collaborate with other area arts organizations to create opportunities for joint performances.
Program two workshops for the chorus each season with outside clinicians.
Hire the necessary instrumentalists and soloists for concert programming.
Prepare program notes for concerts.
Work with the Board of Directors in fundraising efforts, marketing activities, and community
events.
Attend monthly meetings of the Board of Directors and present a report on the state of the choirs
and upcoming concerts.
Work with the Board of Directors to develop a paid Operations Manager position description for
the organization. Assist the Board to recruit, hire, and supervise the position.
Desired Qualifications
Significant choral and orchestral conducting experience.
Substantial knowledge of vocal pedagogy.
Advanced degree in music.
Experience working with volunteer singers.
Extensive and diverse knowledge of the choral repertoire.
Salary is 22,500.00 annually. An additional $7,500.00 will be paid to direct the Intermezzo choir.
