ANNOUNCING AUDITIONS FOR THE VANCOUVER YOUTH CHOIR

For experienced singers aged 14-23

audition date Sept 23, 2014

 

Choral director Carrie Tennant is pleased to announce the formation of the Vancouver Youth Choir. Weekly rehearsals will be held at Vancouver’s St John's Shaughnessy Anglican Church starting in October.  Repertoire will be eclectic and challenging, ranging from Monteverdi and Dan Mangan to Icelandic folk music and cutting-edge new composers, and performances will incorporate creative staging, movement and multimedia.

 

"So many of us in today's world depend on technology to find meaning and connection to community,” explains Tennant. “Choral music reminds us that connecting human to human and voice to voice is still a vital part of the human experience. My experience as a choral conductor has taught me that when young people are part of the creation of something beautiful they are irrevocably changed.”

 

Carrie Tennant is well known in the Canadian choral community for her creative approach to working with choirs. As a high school teacher, she built a nationally recognized choral program at Maple Ridge Secondary School. Currently she is the Artistic Director of EnChor, and the Associate Artistic Director of Coastal Sound Music Academy, where she directs their award-winning youth choir.  Last year Carrie was the Artistic Director of Chor Leoni’s MYVoice outreach program, and the Assistant Conductor to Diane Loomer for Chor Leoni itself.

 

“I've spent the past decade working with young choral musicians all over Western Canada and am very excited to build something of my very own, right here in Vancouver where I live,” says Carrie. “It's my hope that the Vancouver Youth Choir will be a place of artistic excellence, where young singers can develop their artistry and reawaken their connection to community."

 

The Vancouver Youth Choir is for singers who:

  • Are passionate about singing and have some choral experience
  • Enjoy performing and travelling and touring with other singers
  • Have some music reading skills, strong sense of pitch, and an understanding of basic vocal technique
  • Are open to all types and styles of music
