Volti – San Francisco’s award-winning, front-edge new music chamber choir, under the direction of founder Robert Geary – embarks upon its 35th Anniversary Season with a look back at the group’s roots in the music of Benjamin Britten, and a look forward with six world premieres and four premieres of new versions or adaptations.
The season-opening concerts -- November 22 in San Francisco, November 23 in Palo Alto, and November 24 in Berkeley -- celebrate Britten's 100th birthday with his rarely-performed 8-song cycle "Sacred and Profane." The group also premieres a new commission from its resident composer Mark Winges -- "All Night," settings of the poetry of Gustaf Sobin, and sings works by young composers Forrest Pierce and Sarah Kirkland Snider.
In other news, Volti and Philadelphia's The Crossing (Donald Nally, artistic director) have co-commissioned a major work from Ted Hearne. The bi-coastal premieres of this 30-minute work on an environmental theme will happen in spring 2014.
