Breakout Session Speaker - Online Event
Robin J. Freeman (she/her) is a choral conductor, singer, music educator, and author striving to create vibrant choral communities where people can learn and grow together. She holds a Doctor of Education degree in music education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her current research examines how choral experiences for adult avocational singers can address power inequalities and become flourishing spaces of collaboration, decolonization, and transformation. Other recent publications address topics of connection and humanization in the virtual choir; motherhood in the COVID-19 pandemic; hospitality and inclusion in choral singing; and social-emotional learning in the choral classroom. Robin has over 15 years of music teaching experience in a variety of settings, including professional, higher education, high school, online, and community-based contexts. She has extensive experience directing intergenerational ensembles, where choir members ranging in age from young children to mature voices sing and learn alongside one another. Robin is a founding member of Carnelian, a collective vocal quartet that explores contemporary social issues through programs of music, poetry, and visual art. A committed teacher educator, she has taught graduate courses in conducting, applied voice, choral methods, and musicianship, as well as seminars on the intersection of art and social action. In 2020 she organized an international virtual music conference that brought together hundreds of practitioners, researchers, and pedagogues. Robin also holds a Master’s of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University; a Master’s of Music in choral conducting from Indiana University, Bloomington; and a Bachelor’s of Music Performance in voice from Gordon College. She is currently an Instructor of applied conducting at Teachers College, Columbia University, and operates an international private studio from her home in Germany, where she lives with her partner and two children. www.robinjfreeman.com
